Paducah, KY - Jul 29, 1936 - Johnny Long, Fulton’s right-handed pitching ace, and Bud Adams, Hopkinsville’s batting champion, wrote their names indelibly in the Kitty League records at Hook Park yesterday afternoon as more than 2,500 fans saw them lead the All-Stars to an 8 to 3 victory over the Paducah Indians, first half champions, who had a bad case of jitters.
Long twirled 4 Innings and set the Indians down with a single run and two hits. He had a better record at bat himself than the Braves, connecting for a double and 2 singles in 3 chances. Adams grounded out on his first attempt but he followed with 4 successive singles and furnished one of the fielding features with a beeline throw to third to nab Joe Bestudik as he attempted to make two bases after Gordon Swope had singled to center in the third inning.
Allen Hayes, Paducah ace and possessor of the best pitching record in the Kitty League, had his wildest day of the year and that was coupled with wobbly work in the field by important cogs in the Paducah defense, including Hayes himself.
The All-Stars pelted Hayes for 13 hits, only 3 of which went for extra bases. The Indians collected 10 safeties, 7 of which were off the delivery of John Swank, Union City southpaw who has beaten them three times this season, in the first three innings.
Game Close For While
The game was a bitter battle until the late stages. The All-Stars broke the ice in the second inning. With one away Hayes hit Carl Sikes, Jackson, with a pitched ball and walked Hugh Wise, Owensboro manager. Bobby Richards, Union City, hit between the mound and first base and Hayes dropped Gordorn Swope’s throw as he covered the bag filling the bases. Swank then singled to drive in Sikes and Wise. Hayes made Earl Hahn, Fulton, foul out and “Puny” Wilson, also of Fulton, pop to Bestudik at shortstop.
The Paducah fans went wild in the third inning as the Indians bounded back into the running with 2 tallies. Clyde Bracy led off with a single to center and scored as Jimmy Hoff tripled to right. Wayne Blackburn singled through the box to score Hoff. Bestudik forced Blackburn at second. Swope singled to center but Adams came through with a perfect throw to minimize the danger. Bob Cropenbaker walked, and the inning ended as Richards threw out Glenn Grimes.
Hayes appeared in form during the next two innings and Paducah took a 3-2 lead in the fourth off Long. Hayes, given life when Hugh Wise dropped his foul for the only All-Star error, walked and so did Bracy and Hoff to fill the bases. Blackburn flied out to left, Hayes scoring after the catch but Bracy was caught out at third as Wilson intercepted the throw and lined it to Morgan.
Morgan Gets Triple
Long doubled to left center in the fifth and after two were out Buster Morgan of Hopkinsville tripled to center to drive in the tying run.
In the sixth the All-Stars really got to Hayes. Adams singled, stole second and scored on Sikes’ double. Ray Clonts singled, Sikes stopping at third. Richards hit to Blackburn who forced Clots at second, but Bestudik threw the ball high to first in an attempt for a double play and Sikes scored. Long beat out an infield tap and he reached second and Richards third as Hayes threw the ball away. Hayes fanned Hahn and made Wilson lift to centerfield to escape further damage.
The All-Stars added a run in the seventh on two walks, an infield hit by Adams and an overthrow to first by Hoff. In the eighth they scored twice. Long singled to left and went to second on a perfect sacrifice by Louie Perryman, Mayfield. Blackburn threw out Wilson. Long going to third. Morgan walked and stole second.
Averette Thomphson, Union City slugger, bounced one off Swope’s chest for a single, Long scoring. Adams singled to center to bring in Morgan with the final All-Star tally.
Jesse Webb, curve-ball artist from Jackson, went into the box for the All-Stars in the eighth and a single by Grimes in the eighth was the only damage off him. In the ninth he fanned Hoff and Blackburn in succession.
Defensive honors went to the rival second basemen. Sikes of the All-Stars and Blackburn of the Indians. Both performed in great fashion. Clyde Bracy covered lots of territory in the Indian outfield to gobble up four fly balls, while Wilson was a tower of strength in the All-Star infield.
Before the game each member of the All-Star squad was presented a certificate of honor, signifying his participation in the Kitty League’s first all-star classic, by The Sun-Democrat, sponsor of the game. Dr. Frank H. Bassett, president of the Kitty League, tossed out the fist ball, making Hahn of Fulton swing futilely at a fast-breaking curve.
A high wind made it a bad day for the home run hitters.
