Gassaway Shades Shelton; 2 Clubs Play again Today

Saturday’s Game Featured By Brilliant Fielding; Joe Bestudik Shines

The Owensboro Pirates came to town Saturday and helped the Paducah Indians stage one of the neatest baseball games of the local season, and what is more they gained credit for the triumph.

The tilt was a beautifully pitched duel between Lefty Gassway and Baldwin Shelton, with the lanky southpaw registering a 3 to 2 victory.

Gassaway was touched for 9 hits by the Indians buy he was deadly in the pinches and received great support from his teammates. Shelton pitched by far the best game he has hurled for Paducah. His control was nearly perfect and his fastball had zip on it. He was touched for 8 hits, 4 of which figured in the Owensboro scoring.

The Indians accorded Shelton some nifty support. Joe Bestudik was at his best at shortstop, having 8 assists and turning in several spectacular plays. Jimmy Hoff made a diving bare-handed catch of Gassaway’s foul in the third inning for the outstanding individual play of the day.

Paducah took a lead in the first inning. Clyde Bracy led off with a single to left and was forced by Jimmy Hoff who stole second. Wayne Blackburn popped up to Hayden at third base, but Bestudik singled through short to drive in Hoff.

The Pirates got to Shelton for 2 runs in the third. Hayden led off with a single and after Hoff had snared Gassaway’s bunt Clemens tripled to right center, scoring Hayden. He tallied on a wild pitch by Shelton.

Owensboro ran its lead to 3-1 in the sixth when Hugh Wise doubled and scored after 2 were away on Casper Raspberry’s single through the box.

The Indians, who threatened on several occasions, pushed over their second run in the seventh. With two away Gassaway temporarily lost his control to pass Bracy and Hoff. Blackburn lined a single in left center, scoring Bracy, but Blackburn was out at second as he overslid the bag.

The Indians and Pirates will meet again this afternoon at Hook Park, the tilt starting at 3 o’clock. John Francis Cannon, southpaw, is expected to start on the mound for Paducah with Helvy propably delivering for Hugh Wise’s gang.
